Choosing the perfect wig is not really as simple as walking into a store, or visiting an online lace wig store and grabbing the first one that mimics the latest celebrity style. Of course, if you’re Buying a Wig for a cosplay or costume party, less thought needs to go into your decision. On the other hand, it you’re looking for a lace wig for everyday wear, or a lace front wig to hide the signs of alopecia or hair loss, you want to consider a few other points:
Your Face Shape
Certain styles are more flattering than others, and that’s why you should bear in mind your face shape when buying a wig. The process is exactly the same as for choosing a hairstyle for your natural hair. Bear in mind your face shape when you decide whether you will choose a long or short, wavy or straight human hair wig for everyday use.
Wig Size
Measuring your head circumference is important when choosing a wig, especially for a full lace wig. A wig that is too tight or too big, poses risks of looking unnatural and slipping off your head. You will need a flexible seamstress tape measure to do the measurements, starting from your forehead and taking it around the head. Then, start at the eyebrows and follow around the hairline, and behind the ears. That’s your head circumference, and will determine your wig size:
Ultra petite (for children) fits head circumferences smaller than 20″.
Petites, fits head circumferences smaller than 21″.
Average, fits circumferences of 21.5-22.5″.
Large, fits head circumferences of 22.5″ and larger.
Cap Construction
Although the cap is not really visible on the outside, it is still a very important factor to choosing a wig, particularly if you want it to look natural. If the cap is poorly constructed, it will look like a wig, no matter how you style it. A good quality full lace wig, on the other hand, can look completely natural, and it will be easy to style. The different types of cap constructions include:
- traditional wefts
- open cap wefts
- hand-stitched monofilament caps
- lace caps
- lace front wigs
